A purple clay teapot is a type of handmade pottery originating from Yixing, China. Made from rare and natural purple clay, these teapots are prized for enhancing the flavor and aroma of tea while offering a distinct aesthetic appeal. The unique properties of Zisha (purple clay) make it ideal for brewing fine teas.
The Gao Pan (高潘) Design
The "Pan" teapot traces its origins back to the Qing Dynasty, originally commissioned by the prominent Pan family of Guangdong province for their personal tea ceremonies. The Gao Pan variation features a slightly higher, more elevated profile compared to standard Pan pots, giving it an exceptionally elegant, uplifting, and graceful posture that has been favored by tea scholars for centuries.
This elegant 200ml teapot showcases a classic pear-shaped body that tapers gracefully toward the top, paired with a fitted domed lid and a traditional pearl-shaped knob. The gracefully curved spout ensures a smooth, focused pour, while the loop handle is perfectly proportioned for a comfortable grip.
The teapot is fully handmade from premium Huangjin Duanni (Golden Duan Clay). This highly sought-after original ore is prized for its naturally bright, golden-yellow hue and excellent breathability. The clay features a beautiful, subtle granulated texture that adds a rich, tactile depth to its appearance. With regular use and careful seasoning, Golden Duanni develops a stunning, glowing patina, making it a favorite among collectors.
Huangjin Duanni (黄金段泥) Clay
Fully handmade from Huangjin Duanni, a golden duan clay prized for its naturally bright, golden-yellow hue. With regular use and careful seasoning, it develops a warm, glowing patina, making it a distinct favorite among tea enthusiasts.
Key Features
- 200ml capacity — classic gongfu size
- Fully handmade from "Huangjin Duanni" (Golden Duan Clay)
- Recommended for raw pu-erh, roasted oolong and white tea
A classic Gao Pan for the gongfu tea table — and a fine example of traditional Yixing craftsmanship.
Before first use: rinse the pot inside and out with water just off the boil, then brew two or three rounds of the tea you plan to keep in it.
Every day: rinse with hot water only. No soap, no dishwasher, no stove or microwave. Empty the leaves soon after brewing and let the pot dry with the lid off.
One pot, one tea: the unglazed clay slowly takes on the character of what you brew, so keep this pot for one style of pu-erh.
Match the clay to your tea and the size to the people at your table. Each pot is shaped by hand, so small differences from the photos in color, surface and proportion are normal.
