How to Brew Lao Ban Zhang Ripe Pu-erh Tea: Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Measure the Tea:

    • Use a tea-to-water ratio of about 1:20.
    • Start with 8 grams of tea leaves. For a richer flavor, use 10 grams.
  2. Choose Your Brewing Vessel:

    • For experienced tea drinkers, use a Yixing teapot.
    • For beginners, a gaiwan is recommended as it’s easier to control infusion timing.

  3. Warm Your Utensils:

    • Pour boiling water into your teapot or gaiwan to warm it up, then discard the water.

  4. Rinse the Tea:

    • Add the tea leaves to the vessel.
    • Cover and gently shake the vessel up and down 15-20 times to awaken the leaves.
    • Pour boiling water over the leaves at a fixed point, from a low height, without stirring them.
    • Let the water soak the leaves briefly, then discard the first infusion. This rinse helps to prepare the leaves.

  5. Brew the Tea (Second to Sixth Infusions):

    • Pour water slowly and steadily from a low height, focusing on a fixed point to avoid disturbing the leaves.
    • Infuse for 5-10 seconds, but adjust the time based on the color of the tea.
    • Drain the tea completely to prevent over-extraction.

  6. Adjust Infusion Time (Seventh to Tenth Infusions):

    • Extend the infusion time to 5-10 seconds for these rounds.

  7. Further Infusions (Beyond the Tenth Infusion):

    • Continue to extend the infusion time to 10-30 seconds.

  8. Taste and Adjust:

    • If you prefer a lighter taste, you can brew more than 15 infusions.
    • For a stronger taste, 8-10 infusions should be sufficient.

  9. Enjoy the Brew:

    • When brewed correctly, Lao Ban Zhang ripe pu-erh tea will have a rich, bright red color with aromas of aged tea, caramel, and floral honey, and a smooth, mellow taste.

This method will help you master the art of brewing Lao Ban Zhang ripe pu-erh tea. Enjoy the process and the rich flavors it brings!
